An animated movie adaptation of Nimona was in the works since at least mid-2015, with Blue Sky Studios originally animating it, but that production was officially cancelled in February 2021.[1] On April 11, 2022, it was announced that the movie was picked up again, Annapurna Animation would produce the movie, DNEG would animate it, and Netflix would distribute it.[2][3][4][5][6] The movie premiered at the Festival international du film d'animation d'Annecy/Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France at Theater Bonlieu on June 14, 2023.[5] The movie showed in select theaters starting on June 23, 2023.[7] The movie released for streaming on Netflix on June 30, 2023.[8][9][10]
Blue Sky Studios Production
In June 2015, The Hollywood Reporter reported that 20th Century Fox Animation acquired the rights for an animated feature film adaptation of Nimona.[11][12] Patrick Osborne was set to direct, Marc Haimes was set to write the screenplay, Roy Lee and Adam Stone were slated to produce it, John Powers Middleton would be executive producer, and Gabriel Chu, Vanessa Morrison, and Darlene Camaano Loquet would oversee it.[11]
The movie was to be produced by Blue Sky Studios.[12] "In June 2017, Fox scheduled Nimona to be released on February 14, 2020."[13][14][15] In May 2019, after Disney's acquisition of Fox, the movie was delayed to March 5, 2021.[16] "In November 2019, the movie was delayed again to January 14, 2022.[17] Troy Quane and Nick Bruno were brought on to help with the project in March 2020.[18] Through 2020 there was word that the movie would be released in 2022;[19][20] ND Stevenson stated in June 2020 that the movie was still happening,[21] and said the same in an August 2020 podcast.[22] In August of that same year, Den of Geek reported that the animated movie was still scheduled to be released in 2022, but gave no further details, with Deadline reporting the same in October.[23][24]"[15]
Sources told Business Insider that there was pushback against some of the movie's queer content.[25] "The movie, Blue Sky staffers told Insider last year, centered on a gender non-conforming main character and featured LGBTQ+ themes rarely seen in animated movies. . . . Three former Blue Sky staffers with knowledge of meetings between Disney and Blue Sky leadership teams told Insider . . . that Disney leadership took issue with some queer elements of "Nimona," particularly with a same-sex kiss. . . . The pushback started during a meeting in mid-2020 between the leadership teams, the former staffers said. Blue Sky leadership felt enough pressure in this meeting to leave the kiss out of future presentations to Disney, despite hoping to ultimately include it in the film, the sources said. . . . The same-sex kiss in the movie, the former staffers said, would have been between Ballister Blackheart and Ambrosius Goldenloin, who have a romantic relationship in the graphic novel. . . . Blue Sky leadership eventually showed reels to staffers that included the kiss, the sources said, but the studio was shut down soon after."[25]
According to Quane on the movie's completion before cancellation, "The truth is that we were about 70 percent through layout. We had maybe five sequences into animation, and maybe two actually completed. But we had our story reels, we had all our models built, we had all the locations. All that kind of technical stuff, the front end, the design work, that was all done. We knew the story we wanted to tell.”[26][27]
Cancellation
In February 2021, Deadline reported that the movie adaptation was cancelled due to the shutdown of Blue Sky Studios.[28] "Following the announcement, Stevenson said it was a "sad day" and that he wished the best for everyone who worked at Blue Sky Studios,[1] while Osborne said he was "truly heartbroken" that the studio was closing its doors.[29] . . . Anonymous staffers at Blue Sky interviewed by Business Insider bemoaned the cancellation of the film, calling it "heartbreaking," arguing that the film "didn't look like anything else in the animated world," and saying that they believe it will never "be completed and released."[30]"[15] One staffer revealed that before being cancelled, the movie was "on track" to be finished by October 2021.[30] A few staffers confirmed to BuzzFeed News that the movie had an "I love you" scene [and "a same-sex kiss"] between Blackheart and Goldenloin.[31] Around March 2021, sources told Collider that the unfinished movie was being shopped around to other studios to be completed and it was also reported that Chloë Grace Moretz and Riz Ahmed were to have voiced Nimona and Blackheart, respectively.[32] Later that same month, a former animator at Blue Sky, Rick Fournier, stated that the studio was "very very close to saving the film", but that they "found out it simply was not doable."[33]
Video Materials
Shortly before or around the cancellation, some materials from the movie were leaked in publications on some platforms, which were uploaded to YouTube on July 14, 2021,[34] but the video previously used here was taken down by the uploader some time around March 2022. It was re-uploaded by io9 when the Annapurna, DNEG, and Netflix production was announced.[35]
Annapurna, DNEG, and Netflix Production
After Disney shuttered Blue Sky, the Nimona crew, "led by former Blue Sky co-presidents Andrew Millstein and Robert Baird, shopped the animatic around town."[36] Baird said that "it was through his co-president Andrew Millstein’s long career and strong relationships within Disney Animation that the conversations were even had about potentially rescuing Nimona."[27] Baird also said, “There was definitely a sense of regret from within Disney that the studio was being shut down, . . . And so I think there was emotion that was involved with the decision to say, ‘We understand how close you were to the finish line. If you can make it happen and can find somebody out there who is willing to take the project over, we support that.’ And obviously, with some financial strings attached.”[27]
According to Variety, the "film caught the attention of Annapurna CEO Megan Ellison, who was familiar with the film and had been tracking the project. “I think anyone who has ever felt misunderstood or like an outsider will connect with N.D. Stevenson’s story like I did,” she said in press material for the film. “When I watched the storyboard reels I immediately fell in love with it. Nothing about it felt conventional or built off market research. It’s bold and mischievous and full of love. Nimona has such a powerful voice.” Annapurna stepped in and signed up Millstein and Baird as executive producers. They created Shapeshifter Films so the team could finish “Nimona,” and subsequently joined the company, forming Annapurna Animation. DNEG Animation was hired in the spring of 2021 to help with the animation, becoming collaborators on the film."[36]
On April 11, 2022, ND Stevenson and other sources announced that Annapurna would produce the movie, DNEG would animate it, and Netflix would distribute it sometime in 2023.[2][3][4] According to sources for Business Insider, "Netflix and Annapurna didn't start from scratch. Much of what Blue Sky started remains intact, and members of the Blue Sky creative team have stayed on the project."[37]
Chloë Grace Moretz would still voice Nimona, Riz Ahmed would still voice Lord Ballister Blackheart (renamed Ballister Boldheart), and Eugene Lee Yang would still be voicing Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin.[3][38] Nick Bruno and Troy Quane would direct Nimona, Roy Lee, Karen Ryan, and Julie Zackary would produce it, and its executive producers were Robert L. Baird, Megan Ellison, and Andrew Millstein.[3]
Netflix's first synopsis read: "A Knight is framed for a crime he didn't commit and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he's sworn to kill. Set in a techno-medieval world unlike anything animation has tackled before, this is a story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone."[3]
Aidan Sugano (art director for the project at Blue Sky, production designer for the project at DNEG), noted that at Blue Sky, the "handmade, simplified look was a cross between the mid-century illustrative styles of background artist Eyvind Earle (Disney’s elegant “Sleeping Beauty”) and minimalist wildlife artist Charley Harper. But they turned the world-building into a combination of medieval and modern that mirrored the world we live in."[18] They also incorporated the shape language of Stevenson's comic. "In terms of the animation, it was the most complex film ever attempted at Blue Sky. Fortunately, the studio’s experience on “The Peanuts Movie” proved invaluable for further 2D stylization. “That introduced some of those mixed 2D elements into the 3D universe,” Sugano said. “It’s almost like trying to strip the 3D-ness out of 3D. To go at the core, simple color shapes that are there, and then put back just enough information.” . . . However, it all had to be handed over to DNEG in a form of animated shapeshifting. Fortunately, the studio was no stranger to 2D stylization with Netflix’s adult animated musical series, “Entergalactic,” created by Kid Cudi."[18] According to Bruno, “Unfortunately, we had to restart from square one, rebuilding different pipelines, different technologies . . . But Blue Sky gave a blueprint for what we were looking for, and all of that R&D that went into it, they were able to translate it and apply it with their tech. And we found the right team in DNEG to mind meld and get it into place.”[18] Troy Quane noted that the setting was "an idea of a medieval future, a society that had moved forward technologically in time but whose mindset was still locked in the past with outdated ways of thinking."[39]
Quane released a final frame for the movie depicting Ballister and Nimona on January 4, 2023.[40]
A special screening of the possibly completed movie took place seemingly on/around February 14, 2023.[41] On February 16, 2023, ND Stevenson tweeted an image of what appeared to be another movie screening, also seemingly indicating the movie was complete.[42] On Tuesday, March 14, 2023, Animation Magazine made a post on their Facebook page stating that the movie would release in June 2023, but did not list sources.[6] On April 19, 2023, DNEG announced on their Instagram that their team wrapped up work on the movie.[43]
On April 24, 2023, Netflix reported that Nimona would premiere at the Festival international du film d'animation d'Annecy/Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France: "On Wednesday, June 14, Annecy will present an exclusive screening of the feature film Nimona at the prestigious Theater Bonlieu at 6:00pm which will include Nick Bruno & Troy Quane (directors), ND Stevenson (creator), Karen Ryan & Julie Zackary (producers), and Aidan Sugano (production designer). Fans will also have the opportunity to join the team at a “Making Of” session on Thursday, June 15 at Petite Salle Bonlieu at 11:30am."[5] Netflix also stated that the film would officially release in Summer 2023.
DNEG and Netflix released more images from the movie on April 25, 2023.[44] Netflix also announced new actors.[45][46] Netflix released new movie art on May 10, 2023, and gave a June 2023 release.[47][48][4] A new plot summary was also included in the Netflix article:
"When Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), a knight in a futuristic medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn’t commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona (Chloë Grace Moretz), a mischievous teen with a taste for mayhem — who also happens to be a shape-shifting creature Ballister has been trained to destroy. But with the entire kingdom out to get him, Nimona’s the best (or technically the only) sidekick Ballister can hope for. And as the lines between heroes, villains and monsters start to blur, the two of them set out to wreak serious havoc — for Ballister to clear his name once and for all, and for Nimona to… just wreak serious havoc.
Directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, Nimona is an epic tale about finding friendship in the most surprising situations and accepting yourself and others for who they are"[47]
Netflix announced that the movie would show in select theaters on June 23, 2023.[7]
On May 17, 2023, Netflix released another still.[49] Netflix released a teaser on May 18, with the announcement that the movie would release for general streaming on Netflix on June 30, 2023.[8][9][10] A new poster was also released for the movie, as well as preview art on Nimona's Netflix page featuring Ballister facing off against Ambrosius behind Nimona.[50] Animation Magazine and numerous other third party outlets also revealed more of the cast list.[51] On May 24, 2023, Netflix released more footage of the film in a New on Netflix video.[52] On June 8, 2023, Netflix released a clip from the movie, with Ballister and Nimona meeting each other.[53] Another poster was released on June 13, 2023.[54] Netflix released the full trailer on June 14, 2023, a few hours before the premiere at Annecy.[55] Collider and Netflix released a new clip for the movie on June 21, 2023, connecting previously released footage and stills, with additional footage.[56] Sometime around June 24, 2023, Netflix added two new teasers to its app/browser version under the Trailers & More section, with even more footage and an original song. On June 27, 2023, Netflix released a new clip featuring a number of characters.
Netflix uploaded the movie in full to watch for free on YouTube on February 19, 2024, and then took it down on February 26, 2024.[57][58]

Numerous tools were used to create different parts of the movie. Randy Trager, ACE, stated that DNEG used Avid for editing.[59] Rosinaldo Lages stated that at least part of the subway mural sequence was made in Toon Boom.[60] Archie Donato (DNEG Visual Effects Supervisor) spoke about their use of Nuke, "What Nuke allowed us to do was capture our workflow and scale it massively. For example, when we were working on the breakout scene one of the things the directors pointed out to us was a whole heap of statues that they run through before they break out of the window. The directors said, we want to feel like it’s the hall of fame kind of a thing."[61] The interviewer, Ian Failes, also noted that the movie used Houdini and Maya.
Anthony Kemp (Visual Producer) stated in an interview, "We also developed several proprietary tools to accomplish the graphic look using in-house filtering and the most important aspect of this was to break out individual elements that make up a character into the stand alone render passes so that we could treat those components individually before reassembling the image back. So that means going way deeper into the use of AOVs, where instead of breaking out traditional specular highlights, difference, bounce etc…we ended up breaking out many more components to have creative control over each individual component."[62]
Nimona was also listed on the RenderMan site as one of the 2023 movies to use RenderMan.[63]
In October 2023, Netflix shared a Nimona movie art book for free online.[64] It was later taken down sometime in/before early April, after the 96th Academy Awards, and is no longer accessible, save for a few physical copies that were not put up for sale.
Movie Script
On 29 December 2023, Deadline released the final movie's screenplay script online.[65]

Trivia
- Possible Easter Egg: Around 00:58:00, a femme character with long wavy silver hair, huge glasses, pale skin, and wearing a long-sleeved yellow shirt under a purple dress is watching television. The character resembles Madame Razz as she appears in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which ND Stevenson was showrunner for. During the climax, Ambrosius, the blonde queer hero of the Institution with gold armor, who is in a relationship with a character with a heavy black and red aesthetic who's cast as the antagonist, rescues the character, possibly paralleling Adora and Madame Razz's relationship.
- The DNEG creative team "designed 12 distinct lgbt+ pride flags representing various lgbt+" identities and specifically wanted the trans pride flag to be in the scene where Nimona talks about what being a shapeshifter is like.[66] In the same scene, there's a rainbow flag, and the other flags are scattered throughout the movie.
- The white light reflection/highlight/"specular"/"eye-ding" shape in a character's eyes is reflective of potentially many things: their ability to "shift their perspective and see others differently",[67] "the ideology that was present at that moment of the story",[68] or the shape language of their design.[69]
- ND Stevenson noted that he did a lot of extra lines for crowds and background characters in the movie, and was surprised he was picked to voice Kwispy Dwagon.[70]
